Greatest Moment

Having the ground, and square, ready for their debut season at Siddal in 2006.

Local Hero

Nigel Sladdin – club chairman and the man who drove through the move from Mytholmroyd to Siddal.

Bizarre Fact

The club shares its club bar with the local hockey team.

The Holmes, Scout Road, Mytholmroyd - Halifax CC's Ground in 2005

Whatever the ground lost by way of its location - greyish industrial units line one side of the ground - it more than made up for in handsome side-on views. In particular, spectators who watched the game from the opposite side of the ground to the pavilion, in the shadow of a large hanging tree, were treated to a sensational montage of charming terraced houses and enveloping Yorkshire greenery. It was a wonderful backdrop to the cut and thrust of local league cricket.

There was something wonderfully informal about The Holmes. For example, in the interval between innings you could witness kiddies playing football on the outfield, dogs going for an impromptu wander, ruddy-cheeked players rolling the wicket, and serious cricket-watchers sat in their deckchairs, or their vehicles, close to the main entrance.

And that's not forgetting the hardworking tea ladies (one of whom had 70 years of service to her name) sharing a joke with anyone who entered the bustling tea room-cum-tuck shop (they did a roaring trade and regularly sold out of sandwiches - 'Only cakes and drinks left, I'm afraid, sir!').
