Greatest Moment

Winning Section 'B' of the Huddersfield Central League in 2002.

Local Hero

Andy Day - former club stalwart who died from cancer in 2003.

Bizarre Fact

The club has had three previous incarnations - as Dewsbury NALGO CC, The Hart CC and Royal Oak CC.

The 'Westborough' Name

In 1998 the club took on a new identity as Westborough CC was born.

They chose this name on account of their then geographical base: their council-owned Healds Road HQ was located slap bang in the middle of the Dewsbury suburb of Westborough.

And for the record: Westborough is a part of Dewsbury famous for its hospital, Methodist church, reservoir and high school.

Moving Moment

The change of name was accompanied by a change of league. This time the club looked outside its immediate environs and joined the Huddersfield Central League.

The club settled immediately into life in the new competition and in their first season they landed the Section ‘D’ title. The following year in Section ‘C’ proved to be no more difficult as that championship was also won at the first attempt.

Blaze Tragedy

At the start of the 2002 season there was another fire at Healds Road.

The local council stepped in and supplied the club with a small replacement clubhouse.

Every cloud has a silver lining…and the fire encouraged the club to develop its relationship with Westborough Methodist Church.

And for several years the church hall acted as tearoom on Saturday and Sunday afternoons, with players trooping across the road for some wonderful teatime food.

At their new home - The Combs, Thornhill - Westborough continue to flourish in the Central League. And in 2008 they took on the name Thornhill & Westborough CC.

Andy Day

In addition to Westborough, all-rounder Andy played for Dewsbury, Thornhill, Hopton Mills and Slazengers.

But the team he loved the most was Westborough. His greatest moment with the club came in the Section ‘B’ title-winning 2002 season when he won the divisional batting prize.

Tragically, Andy died the following year after an eight-month battle with skin cancer.

Club secretary Barry Mitchell paidtribute to Andy, by saying that he was an ‘excellent team man and, although he played for other teams, he came back to Westborough because he loved it best. He will be greatly missed by everyone.’

A special seat is dedicated to Andy’s memory.

Club Heroes

Jonny Mitchell: As well as lifting the Section ‘B’ bowling prize in the triumphant 2002 season, Jonny also won the T. Ramsden Trophy after claiming the most clean-bowled victims in the Huddersfield Central League.

Dave Lodge: In 2002 Dave captained the 1st XI to the Huddersfield Central League Section ‘B’ title. Dave also won the T. Ramsden Trophy after claiming most clean-bowled victims in the Huddersfield Central League during the 1998 season.

Barry Mitchell: Barry is the man who makes Westborough Cricket Club tick. His sterling behind-the-scenes work has enabled the Club to blossom over the last few years.

He has also been an invaluable friend of this HLF Cricket Heritage Project – and his assistance has been crucial as we have researched the history of Westborough C.C.. Thanks Barry!

Dave Booth: Hardworking club groundsman. Dave is a Westborough stalwart who has been with the Club since the NALGO days. He won the prestigious Huddersfield Central League Fred Stallard Trophy in 2004.
