Greatest Moment

1912 - winning the Association/Lumb Cup 'Double'.

Local Hero

J.W.Lumb - top Central League batsman in 1918.

Bizarre Fact

In 1921 a Leymoor umpire was 'struck off' after a complaint from Holmbridge CC.

Early History

Leymoor joined the Huddersfield Central League in 1915. The local cricket scene was pretty fluid during the First World War, and Leymoor, together with Meltham, Thongsbridge, Scholes and Holmbridge, benefited, entering the League at a difficult time for everyone
In later years the club stopped and started, and also had a period in the Huddersfield Association.

The 'new' Leymoor C.C. emerged in the early 1950s and did well in its first decade. The 1st XI won Section B of the Central League twice (1953 and 1959) and the 2nd XI won the championship in 1959 and Section B on a hat-trick of occasions (1953, 1955 and 1956). The club also had a purple patch in the late-1970s: the 1st XI winning Section B in 1978 and the 2nd XI netting the Section E title in 1977.

Mentions in the Minutes

Off the field, the club has been involved in lots of interesting goings-on. The Central League minute-book tells us that:

On 2 August 1921, 'A letter from Holmbridge was read reporting the umpire from Leymoor who officiated in their match with Hepworth on 9 July; proposed and passed that this man be struck off the Umpires list.'

On 13 June 1958, 'Leymoor's chairman suspended from all cricket under the jurisdiction of the Huddersfield Central Cricket League until the end of the season, for pulling up the stumps in a Tinker

Cup tie, stating that it was unfit to play. Leymoor's opponents, Clayton West, were awarded the match.'

And on a rather delicate matter:

On 8 August 1978, 'Dodworth, Penistone and Clayton West representatives all complained about the state of the wicket at Leymoor.'

On 5 September 1978, 'A letter from Leymoor was read to the meeting giving the action being taken by their club to improve their wicket. The meeting was interested to hear of their action and approved their letter.'

Parkwood Road

Just down the road from Golcar CC and their Swallow Lane headquarters is Parkwood Road, the home of Leymoor CC - once known as Leymoor United CC.

On the local cricket circuit, Leymoor's ground is celebrated for one thing: the proximity of the Walkers Arms, the local pub. Needless to say, visiting cricketers love visiting this part of Golcar - for the pre-match drinking, the post-match drinking, and to be honest, you could also put an order in at the bar while you were fielding on that side of the ground.

The links between village cricket and the pub trade are legion. The origins of the game are intimately bound up with the Hambledon club, in deepest Hampshire, and the local watering hole there - The Bat and Ball Inn. Since that period, cricket teams have emerged out of pubs (literally and metaphorically) and landlords have often sponsored or played for teams (or both at the same time).

The pub aside, Leymoor is an attractive cricket venue. When you look out from the pavilion you are greeted not just by the hostelry, but also by a magnificent panorama of houses, cottages and other buildings far into the distance. Add in a few attractive bits of greenery, and you have a splendid view looking down the Colne Valley.

The pavilion building is simple and modest. It is also multi-purpose. The sign on the front says that Leymoor CC share the premises with Golcar Band, and in this part of the world music bands are a very significant aspect of local life. (The Band recently received a special grant, which enabled the Parkwood Road pavilion to be extended). Other community groups have also made use of the pavilion building.
